Protocols.io and Research Space are pleased to announce an important enhancement to the integration of the RSpace electronic lab notebook with protocols.io. In addition to public protocols, it is now also easy to import private methods from protocols.io into RSpace.

From June, 2018 it’s been possible to link to and import protocols directly from protocols.io into RSpace.  This enabled researchers to streamline their workflows by incorporating examples from a growing library of protocols into their experimental write-ups in RSpace.

The enhancement, which is now available, extends this functionality to private protocols as well as public protocols. Individual researchers can now make use of the RSpace integration while still keeping protocols private, as can protocols.io users who have set up private groups in protocols.io.  There is more information on private groups and public groups in protocols.io here, and full documentation of the integration with RSpace is available here.

How it works

To insert a protocol from protocols.io into RSpace, simply select “Create from protocols.io”.  This exposes the protocols.io directory, from which you can search and select a protocol for import into RSpace.  Authors, metadata about the original source, and publication data carry over to RSpace along with all the live links, images, and structured text such as tables.

To create a link to a protocol in protocols.io when editing an RSpace document, click the “import from protocols.io” icon. You’ll be prompted for your protocols.io username and password, and after authenticating, the protocols.io directory will be exposed.  Select the protocol you want, and by ticking the box next to that protocol, a link to the protocol will be created in the RSpace document you are working on.

Bridging Experimental Documentation and Computational Analysis: RSpace & Galaxy

Integrations

Together with the Galaxy Europe team at University of Freiburg we have integrated RSpace and Galaxy to eliminate manual data transfer between research documentation and computational analysis. Researchers can now browse and import files directly from RSpace Gallery into Galaxy workflows, reducing errors and saving time. Available in Galaxy version 25.0, this integration is the first step toward executing Galaxy workflows directly from within RSpace.
