The electronic lab notebook that is accessible anywhere, anytime
eCAT is accessible anywhere, anytime, through any web browser. How does that benefit you and your lab?
eCAT on the road or on the fly
Most PIs we know spend a lot of their time outside the lab and away from the office. They have conferences to attend, classes to teach, administrative responsibilities, and external collaborations to manage, in addition to the thousand and one other things that need to get done. If they are clinicians they also have the full panoploy of patient responsibilities. This means that they don't get to spend as much time in the lab, or as much face to face time with lab members, as they might like.
What you require is a sort of repository of data that is accessible from anywhere, when you're flying around the world, because that is what we all do now, we don't sit in offices in the university all the time
PI, regenerative medicine lab, Edinburgh.
If you are a PI, eCAT will help you stay in touch with your lab...
- Because eCAT's sharing can be set up so that you have access to everyone's non-private records, you can keep track of all the research that's been done, that day or even that hour, from your hotel room on the other side of the world
- You can comment on the work that others have done in eCAT, again over the internet without having even to pick up the phone, which may not be practical given time differences
- You can use eCATs notification and messaging system to give instructions and ask for status updates
- You can respond to questions that are coming in from lab members, when you have time to do so, between meetings or at the start or end of the day
As a result, you will end up less stressed, other members of the lab won't feel neglected or out of touch when you are away from the lab, and everyone's productivity will be enhanced.
Working from home with eCAT
Everyone these days needs to do some of their work from home. And with flexible work schedules and multiple commitments, that suits most scientists very well. In fact the ability to work from home is now a must. But if your lab's files are stored on a computer located in the lab it may be impossible for people to access them unless they are in the lab. That can mean taking tough decisions about staying in the lab despite other work and non-work commitments or just putting off the work.
With eCAT these tough personal decisions and lost productivity are things of the past. eCAT is a web-based system and can be accessed through a web browser from any computer connected to the internet. So everyone in the lab can work from home. If you are a grad student or a postdoc, this means that you can continue writing up the experiment you were working on that day in the lab. If you are a PI, it means that you can run a quick end of day check on the work that others have done in eCAT during the day.
